Karl Rove's electoral map shows Sen. Barack Obama with the biggest lead of the campaign, with 317 electoral votes in his favor. Chris Wallace pointed out that on the map, it predicts Obama winning Colorado, Indiana, and Ohio---all states which traditionally vote Republican. This is bad news for Sen. John McCain, indicating that "he's got a very steep hill to climb". According to Rove, the states that would need to turn in McCain's favor are Nevada, Montana, North Dakota, Virginia, Florida, and Missouri. These six toss-up states comprise 64 of the 535 electoral votes. McCain would also need to "strip away" the states of Ohio and Indiana to bring his total electoral vote count to 252. The addition of Colorado and Virginia, or Pennsylvania and one of the two aforementioned states would bring McCain's total to about 282 votes, enough to secure the presidency. Rove frequently emphasized the challenge that would accompany accomplishing these tasks, but offered a method of getting the job done. He said that McCain needs to "pound home on two big messages" which highlight Obama's inexperience and the flaws in his tax and war plans.
Later in the show, Wallace asked a question which led Rove to explore the accuracy of the polls that are being shown on the major news media stations. Rove said that Investors Business Daily had the most accurate poll in 2004 and discredited the NY Times, CBS, and Newsweek polls. Even with the large discrepancy in numbers, each poll shows Obama in the lead, whether it be one point or thirteen. Therefore, I agree with Rove's comments that for McCain to win the states he needs it will be extremely difficult. With the abundance of early voting in some key states, and six days till the election, it may even be too late for McCain to gain more support. McCain definitely has a lot on his plate (including the highly publicized inter-campaign drama) and I don't think he'll be able to pull off this victory.
According to Karl Rove, John McCain must climb a very steep hill in order to change the way the race seems to be going. “He's got to win all of the toss-up states, 64 electoral votes, all the yellow-shaded states on the map. hen he needs to strip away Ohio and Indiana with 31 electoral votes to get him to 252. And then he needs to either win Colorado and Virginia, which gets him to 274, or win one of them plus Pennsylvania, which would get him to 282 or 286” It’s hard to believe that McCain in a little less then a week will be able to what Karl recommends. It is possibility that John McCain wins, but according to the polls and electoral maps shown it just looks like a fat chance to me. “What he's got to do is pound home on two big messages. One message is, "I'm right on the issues and he's wrong when it comes to taxes and the war on terror, and I'm experienced and ready to be president, and whatever his strengths and skills are, he, Senator Obama, is not ready to be president." I believe that he should have pounded on those two big issues earlier not nine days before the election. Doing this might change the minds of a few people but not enough to change the polls.
