In this weeks edition of Meet the Press, Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) and Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL) discuss the bailout of the auto industry. Now this is an interesting topic because America created this industry yet our American companies are the one's about to collapse. How did this happen and how should the U.S. Government handle this situation? Like always BE SPECIFIC and use quotes from the show to illustrate your point.

This week in Meet the Press, Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) and Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL) discussed the bailout of the auto industry. They were both in completely opposite sides which made it interesting to hear what each side had to say. In one hand we had Sen. Shelby opposing the $25 billion bailout for the auto industry and in the other we had Sen. Levin who strongly supported this bailout. Some of the reasons why Sen. Shelby thinks that the auto industry is in this crisis now is because they are,"They're not building the right products." He argues that they did make the right products at one time but they no longer do. He also said that they've got good workers but it is the management system that is not working. Another thing he thinks its a main issue is because they are no innovative,"They're a dinosaur, in a sense, and I hate to see this because I would like to see them become lean and, and hungry and innovative."
On the other side we had Sen. Levin who supported the $25 billion bailout because he thinks that this is the solution. He says that there are too many jobs involved and that this is a national problem and that the government can not just sit back and let this industry collapse. He used Europe as an example. "Other countries are supporting their industries through this difficult period. The European automakers are requesting $56 billion in temporary support, and we expect that they'll be getting it from the European community."
In my opinion I agree with Sen. Shelby. I do think that if the American automobile industry is in this crisis is because they are doing something wrong and if other foreign industries managed to do better than them it should be up to them to figure out where the problem is, like management or innovation. I don't think the government should spend that amout of money on this when they could use it for something better.

I think that the government needs to help the auto industry, and that Sen. Shelby is wrong, because if they don’t, they will lay off people, go bankrupt and the American auto industry will be gone. If the auto industry has good workers, and it’s the management that’s the problem, who’s going to get laid off first? The workers will, and that’ll just add to the growing unemployment rate that America has. The bail out needs to be given so these companies can start producing more competitive cars and once the companies are on there feet then the management needs to be looked at. Also, if you don’t think that this is something worth spending money on, what is?

I agree more with Senator Levin. The auto industry not only plays an important role in our economy, but it also provides many people with jobs. Most of my family lives in Michigan, which is where some of the major auto industries are. Im not very educated on the situation, but i know that my brother and his girlfriend were left without jobs because the factories had to lay off workers. What about all the other people who work in the industry... how are they going to make a living if the industry collapses?
In meet the press Sen. Carl Levin, & Sen. Richard Shelby discussed the bailout. In or for this bailout to work they need the Senate Republicans to help pass this. Sen. Richard Shelby said they were building the right products at one time. If the company would of put out the right products, they would be good right now, but instead they are struggling. All this occurred because of bad management. They had good workers but bad management. Maybe a new CEO can help this companies out.
If all these companies could have good management these companies would have better sales than they do now. The government should not spend any money on things they have no fault at. These companies should take reponsibility from the situation they got in. If the CEO new the economy was bad than he should of not produced over products.

I'd like to elaborate on Travis' comment. I agree with him when he says that we need to help the auto industry. America was the one that invented the auto industry, and now we're behind. If our auto industry is doing bad, we need to do something to fix it rather than turn or backs on them and spend money somewhere else. We need to build better cars that are feul efficient, and friendly to the environment. This will also help US out if you think about it. With feul efficient and environmentally friendly cars, we would save money on gas, AND we would be contributing to a healthier environment. The automobile industry is definitely worth spending for. We need to do more research in this area and encourage new, competitive products from the automobile industry.

I think I lean more towards the middle, don’t help them to the extreme, but don’t leave them hanging (auto industry). Giving the company money and continuing the same routine isn’t going to benefit anyone. I feel that you can’t avoid lay offs, many business laid off employees, but at the same are coming up with new innovative ways to attracts more attention, potential customers and all together get the revenues back up and start hiring again. Altogether give some support, but demand reform.

I think the government needs to help the auto companies because eventually they are going to go with bankruptcy making many workers jobless. Agreeing with the bailout is good because it gives our economy somewhat of a head start and not making our country with less jobs. The bailout will help us out in the long run.
