Chapter 13-17 Essays Due 4/27

Here are the next 5 chapter essays you need to do. I have given you 2 options for each chapter with you only choosing one. Just like last week you need to write the essay alone (w/o outside help), make a grading rubric and then grade the essay. These are do on Monday April 27th. Good Luck!!!!!

Chapter 13

1)Explain the role of the president in national security policy. In particular, what powers does the president have in times of war and national crisis?

2)Some founding fathers feared that the president might become a monarch if given too many powers. Comment on the argument that the presidency can be a threat to democracy. What implications might a powerful president have for the size of government in America?

Chapter 14

1)Briefly describe how the rise of the social service state and the rise of the national security state have increased the scope of government. Were these necessary developments? Explain.

2)In what ways is the very size of the federal budget an inhibition on adding or dramatically expanding government programs? How has President Obama been affected by this?

Chapter 15

1)What methods are at the disposal of presidents and Congress to control the bureaucracy?Which are most widely used? How effective are they? Do you think these controls are sufficient? Explain.

2)What is an ʺiron triangle,ʺ and what is its significance in American government? Give an example. Are these natural groupings which should be encouraged or at least tolerated, or are they fundamentally dangerous to a democracy? Explain.

Chapter 16

1)What do presidents look for in selecting a Supreme Court justice? How often are they successful in appointing judges who reflect their judicial philosophy? Provide a few examples from the twentieth century of presidents succeeding and failing to have a direct influence on the Court.

2)Describe the strengths and weaknesses of the judiciary as a political institution. What do the courts have the power to do? What do they not have the power to do? How does this power compare to other political institutions?

Chapter 17

1)What is the main agency for making monetary policy in the government? Who chooses its leaders, and how are they removed from direct control by either the president or Congress? Is this appropriate? Explain.

2)Discuss the economic policy of protectionism. What are its advantages and disadvantages?
