On Meet the Press, Barack Obama made his first appearance and discussed many things facing our nation over the next couple months. The main topic was the economy and President-Elect Obama talked about that there is no quick fixes. What is the plan that the new administration has and how can we start today to help change the economic landscape? Also how do you feel Obama is doing so far with the burden of our countries problems waiting for him in just one month away? BE SPECIFIC!!!!!!!!

Obama wants to cut pork barrel spending to help our economy, "those days are over". He also wants to provide "The Big 3" with assistance to help stop job loss. He wants the big 3 to restructure into a more sustainable business model. On foreclosures, Obama wants a moratorium, which will help prevent falls in property values and will bolster the economy. Obama really wants to focus on investing in infrastructure, which will ultimately create a lot more jobs. He wants to rebuild schools, and invest in electronic medical records, which will be "down-payments" on long term sustainable growth.
Under these circumstances, Obama can only make plans. He can't execute, he can only think about what he wants to do. I think that Obama has dealt with these problems waiting on his door step well. He has discussed his plan for an investment in the largest form of infrastructure, which will create a lot more jobs. He better have a plan, because procrastination right now could be disastrous.
On MEET THE PRESS, President elect Barack Obama confessed that there are in fact no quick fixes to the economy. First he pointed out that "the key for us is making sure that we jump start the economy in a way that doesn't just deal with the short term, doesn't just create jobs immediately, but also puts us on a glide path for long-term, sustainable economic growth." He also stressed his infrastructure plan; he even described this as a down payment on the kind of long-term, sustainable growth that we need.
I think Obama is doing great on keeping himself headstrong and focused on the HUGE issues looming in 44 short days. He is making sure that a top rate FAST and diligent team works for a SUBSTANTIAL goal. He continued, "We've got to make sure that the economic stimulus plan is large enough to get the economy moving."
This Sunday on Meet the Press Barak Obama talked about his plan once he is in office. The main issue that was discussed was the economic plan. He made it very clear that there wasn't any short cuts to better this economy. He also stated that it is going to get worse before it gets better. Some of his plans are to invest in things that not only help the country in the short term but that are also going to have a positive impact on coming years. Some examples of this are building roads, rebuilding our schools, and investing in new technology that will help in hospitals, schools, etc.
Gas prices was another issue that was discused during this interview and Obama said that the gas prices were going to continue to stay low; however, one of the things that we can do in order to help change the economic landscape is to adjust and start using more energy friendly cars. I think that Obama and his team are well prepared to take office next month and I'm sure we can expect great things from them because they are staying on top of everything and are working very fast as compared to the past teams.
The Obama administration is developing a stimulus package that will include investing in infrastructure programs (concerning roads and brides), rebuilding/renovating schools and making them energy efficient, and investing in electronic medical records to decrease health care costs. The aspects of the stimulus are supposed to provide immediate relief as well as secure sustainable growth in the future of our country's economy. Obama also stressed the importance of considering the growing budget deficit. He is stern on cutting pork spending by Congress to solve problems. A successful stimulus package is necessary to give the economy the boost it needs. Obama also clarified his position on the government taking over companies, saying that it in the past, it "hasn't done that very well". Obama wants the government to not take over completely, but to regulate more. He also reiterated his feelings on holding executives accountable and responsible. Lastly, Obama talked about the need for quick action dealing with the foreclosure issue. He wants to impose a moratorium on foreclosures and establish new financial regulations in banks to prevent this epidemic from reoccurring.
I think that as much as Obama talks about holding the CEOs that put us in this pickle responsible for their mistakes, he's not doing anything to implement that idea. When Brokaw prodded him about current management keeping their jobs, Obama beat around the bush and didn't answer the question as it was asked. Instead of a simple yes or no, he contradicted previous statements about the Big Three's failure to adapt to new financial markets by saying that the companies have made "some progress". Now is not the time to try to play both sides of the field; as the next President, he needs to take a firm stand and stick with it. Now I see how his youth may be pose a problem to the effectiveness and success of his presidency. He seems like a child, eager to please... he needs to step his game up.
It is clear that Obama has a lot of problems heading his way this January. There are tons of things to do, so he can't waste any time. It seems to me that he and his team are trying pretty hard to get prepared for his term. I feel however, that this is going to be quite impossible. No matter how hard they try to prepare for this, there's no way they can get completely ready. He had this to say about his upcoming tasks: "My number one priority coming in is making sure that we've got an economic recovery plan that is equal to the task."
I think Obama is doing his best, but this undertaking is too huge to be completely ready for. I liked that he was specific about his priorities. To do this, he said we need to focus on #1: rebuilding our schools, #2: making sure that they're energy efficient,and #3: making sure that we're investing in electronic medical records and other technologies that can drive down health care costs. He said that this should help our economy in the short-term and the long-term. In my opinion, his administration is heading in the right direction, but how much can they really get done in 4 years???
Part of his plan is to loan automaker businesses to help then now since they are the backbone of the American economy but he wants them to improve their business plan since it is taxpayer money going in. Also, he wants to work on infrastructures to make them more energy efficient and by doing so he will create more jobs and save more money in the long run. He also wants to focus on Main Street and come up with a plan that will benefit homeowners directly since they are facing tough times with the increasing rate in foreclosures. He also mentioned increasing taxes for the wealthier class because it would benefit the entire nation unlike the tax cuts proposed by others that would only benefit the wealthy.
About how Obama is handling the pressures of the US's international affairs and problems abroad, I think he is handling it quite well. He is facing the problems head on like he should and has come up with a great team of leaders that are well equipped with the knowledge to pull the country out of the hole we are in. I think many other people would be dazed by so much turmoil with countries abroad.

i think Obama is doing good so fa with the burden he has ahead. The plans that he spoke of today were sufficent and well thought out. Im sure everyone can agree that these suvere changes wont be made overnight but it seems as though he has great plans to make change happen. hes already focused a great deal on the problems that he will face in a month and it seems as though the things hes talking about doing are going to get us where we need to be as a country. with the plans and ideas hes taking forth now i can only imagine whats going to happen in a month. overall i think hes doing a great job as the president elect so far.

He says nothing will get fixed quick, it all takes time. Maybe all of these changes wont go in effect probably until his 8 years is over if he is elected again. One of his things that need to be invested in are large infrastructure programs like roads and bridges. But if he says to start investing in projects like tht, will it help the economy get better because it seems it's just wasting more money on projects that shouldn't be done and use it on other more important projects.
I feel Obama is getting really prepared for this hard transition Bush has left him. He is laying down everything that needs to be done even though he is not in office yet. He is making sure that people made the right choice in electing him as the next president. He is putting his plans on the table to people do know he was beig honest on what his policy was. So he is making sure things will go smoothly unlike Bush administration is not doing anything so his transition is smoothly.

I disagree with your belief that Obama is prepared to make a smooth transition. You said that he laid out a clear plan so that us, as Americans, know that he is true to his word. However, he has yet to present a comprehensive game plan. Sure, he isn't the President yet... but he only has 43 days to come up with a plan that will fix 8 years of economic downturn. Once he stops generalizing and comes up with a specific stimulus proposal, I'll be back on his side.
Tom Brokaw also grilled Obama about his addiction to nicotine. Do you feel that the President should stop smoking or is it his business?

It is the president's personal business to smoke. Unless smoking kills a billion people at once, then it should be an issue brought up. I personally don't like smoking, but it's not something you bring up as to define someone's character.

I agree, President-elect Obama must have a plan on what to do in office once he is in. If Obama didn't then it would make him look just as foolish as the Auto companies coming to Congress for money. Obama's plans reminds me of FDR's New Deals.

I actually felt a little bit uncomfortable for Barack Obama. I was very surprised he smoked, maybe I overlooked something. But I do believe a president should set an example for the American people. We need a healthy president and Obama needs to break his addiction in order to possibly set a better example.

I agree with you, procrastination is VERY dangerous. So far all Obama can do is plan because he's the president elect. And so far he's done well. Its almost time to execute. I hope we won't be dissapointed.

As Ariel said, im am also against smoking... i HATE just being around someone who smokes; however, this is just a personal addiction. Tons of Americans smoke, and that is their own issue. It may be in Obama's best interest to at least attempt to stop smoking for himself, but i dont think he should be judged for his own personal issues.

I think of Barack Obama in a different way now. I didn't knew he smoked and that just brings a bad image on his part. He is not making a good example for anyone. My parents raised me on the fact that smoking is bad, and eventually it can kill people in the long run. I don't think smoking is something that can be overlooked.

I agree with you when you say he can't execute, but he can though sketch something out to whatever he wants to do in his presidential term. He does need to have a good plan for the economy and I believe when he was competing with McCain something that made him stand out was his plan for the economy.

Yes I agree that smoking is someones personal business. But one of the reasons that Obama was elected was his "green" energy policy. Smoking isn't exactly the face of "eco-friendly" Obama.

I agree that it wont be easy to fix this problem, but Obama does have a pretty good grasp on what he's doing. It's going to be a rocky process, and it will take some time, but at least now we have an idea of whats going to happen soon.

I dont think we should focus on whether or not Barack Obama smokes. We're in an economic crisis here! If smoking cigarettes helps Obama focus on how he's going to take us out of this recession,then let him do it.

I agree with you, I also think Obama has dealt with the problems the best way he can right now. He currently does not have the position to get things rolling but at least he's getting prepared for when he is in office because it could most definitely cause more problems for America if he came into office without a plan.

I too think Obama is headed in a good direction with the people he has chosen to be part of his administration. I'm don't think Obama can completely fix our problems in just one term but I'm confident that he will be able to get that "jump start" our country needs.

I find the topic of Obama smoking truly unimportant. I don't think it makes him either more or less qualified to be president or to develop a plan to fix our economic crisis. I find the topic irrelevant and don't see why Tom Brokaw would focus on that rather than a topic that really mattered.

I disagree. During this economic crisis, job loss is what has hit the hardest and is whats felt the hardest. Obviously building a new road isn't going to raise stock prices, but the point is that it is going to create jobs, and that is what is definately needed most right now.

I believe that if Obama wants to continue smoking it is his business as long as he doesn't do it inside the White House. However, it would be much healthier and easier if he would just stop I'm sure his daughters and wife will be much more happier. He is just another human and like many Americans he is addicted to nicotine but just like any other American he has to obey the NO SMOKING rule inside the White House.

I agree with your take on procrastination in Obama's camp. If wants to get things done, he's going to have to put his nose to the grindstone. There isn't any time to waste when it comes to his plans for America. I think that once things settle down economically, he will have have a little breathing room, but until then, (which is probably a ways away) he and his staff are going to have to work for success.

You didn't really hear what Obama's big plan was. He wants to invest in major infrastructure. The things that you listed are all things he wants to do, but those are minimal. The main thing is investing in infrastructure, which will create a lot more jobs.

Personally, I don't really care if someone smokes in the privacy of their own home, but I don't think that the American public would react to kindly if they saw Barack Obama smoking Newport Pleasures while pushing his daughters on the swing set. I don't think people should make such a big deal about it. Mainly, its kind of surprising to me that he smokes. I just never really pegged a President as a smoker.

Yeah it makes Obama look bad, because by smoking he is not really showing that he is head-on with environmental policies; but smoking is his personal business.

i alson agree with cindy. i was very glad to see the lowering in gas prices and i do think a way that we can adjust the ecnomic landscape is to use more hybrid and energy sufficent cars! we can also take away the unnecessaries. also like yesenia i agree with cindy as well with the fact we can only expect great things from him in the near future. and i feel that him and his team are well prepared and i cant wait to see what the future holds.

I agree with what you said about Obama heading in the right direction. It's true he does have his priorities straight and he is coming up with well thought out plans, and although it's hard to believe he can accomplish all that he is talking about he has not promised he will accomplish it all in one term. Like he has said numerous times before, change is not going to happen over night, it takes time and hard work. I don't think that Obama is making promises to make everything better over night, but he is setting up plans and ideas on how to help better our economy as well as he can. One man can't do it all but I believe he will try to fix our problems anyway he can.
